Math Pilot Programs

Hello families!

You should have received a note home in your student's O.W.L. Binder from our district, that informed you that our class is participating in our district's math pilot program.  We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to give three different math programs a "test run" in order to help our district choose a new math program for next year and beyond.  So far, we are loving it!

We are starting this pilot program with a program called "Stepping Stones" by Origo.  It is a very hands-on program that is very engaging for students.  Throughout the end of this month and through the middle of March, we will be completing a unit on addition strategies.  The big strategy focus is finding ways to make ten.  We will be practicing this through reading big books together, working with partners and small groups to solve problems, using our fingers as tools, as well as using connecting cubes.  As homework comes home, please encourage your child to find new ways to make ten that help them solve the addition problems.

We have really enjoyed the program this far.  I feel that the children are developing a much deeper understanding of strategies to solve addition problems, that will stick with them throughout their lives.  If you'd like to learn more about the program, feel free to follow the link to Origo's website.

As always, don't hesitate to call or email with any questions!
