Hello first grade families! I am so excited to share with everyone the exciting new things we've been doing in first grade! The year is off to a great start, and I can't wait to see the amazing things we will be accomplishing throughout the year.
So far, we have been learning the 3 ways to read a book, (read the words, read the pictures, and retell the story) and practicing reading to self. We have been building our stamina (ask your children to explain the word STAMINA to you...they've all learned what it means!) and have increased our reading stamina to a whopping 22 minutes! That's amazing for so early in the year! I'm so proud of our little readers, and I can't wait to see how long we can read for in another month! In math, we've been practicing counting using a number line, counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and writing tally marks. A big part of our math this early in the year is setting up math routines. We have been learning how to use math tools properly, working cooperatively in groups, and completing our calendar routine. In science, we have been learning all about plants, and in social studies we have been working on our All About Me Unit. We will be learning about ourselves, our class, our family, and school. We have been having lots of fun!
Homework will be beginning this week. Check for math practice work in your child's OWL Binder. Soon (either this week or next) your child will be bringing home a book to read each night as well. More info to come soon!
Check out our pictures from the first few days of school. We're having a blast learning and making friends!
